Coupling of peridynamics and inverse finite element method for shape sensing and crack propagation monitoring of plate structures

A novel structural health monitoring approach is developed by coupling the inverse finite element method (iFEM) and peridynamic theory (PD) for real-time shape sensing analysis crack propagation of plate structures. This hybrid method, called iFEM-PD, can account deformation, stress, damage states any sensor-equipped structure in real time without need loading knowledge regardless complexity topology or boundary conditions. The integrated iFEM-PD first reconstructs continuous (full-field) deformations from discrete strain measurements then utilizes them to obtain full-field strains within structure. Subsequently, iFEM-reconstructed are employed with a suitable diagnosis index quantify critical (possibly damaged/cracked) zone domain. Next, this modeled populating PD material points establishing non-local interactions between points. Enforcing predicted iFEM domain as displacement conditions, located internal damaged recalculated through analysis. During simulation, prognosis achieved precisely modeling discontinuities (crack etc.) analyzing based on particle interactions. capabilities numerically verified problems composite structures subjected various static/dynamic loads.
